The Photodynamic Research Department focuses on the non-thermal and photochemical applications of light and lasers for tissue repair, through interdisciplinary collaboration across the fundamental and clinical sciences.
• Development of photosensitizers and photon-source–enabled platforms, and the pharmaceutical development of these agents via nanobiotechnology.
• Advancement and optimization of photodynamic reactions—inactivation, diagnostic, and therapeutic—through modeling and experimental studies.
• Development of preclinical/clinical applications and combination therapies (e.g., radiotherapy, chemotherapy) integrated with photodynamic therapy.
- Indigenization of therapies for hard-to-treat diseases (e.g., cancers, Alzheimer’s disease) and application of photodynamic methods with antibacterial effects for the management of chronic wounds.
- Identification of concurrent combination regimens—e.g., chemotherapy + photodynamic therapy (PDT)—to enhance therapeutic efficacy.
- Design of novel drug candidates leveraging emerging technologies and investigation of their photodynamic effects.
- Design of drug-delivery systems based on new technological platforms and evaluation of their impact on PDT performance.
• Collaborative research projects: Joint projects with scientific institutions and universities.
• Supervision of student theses: Advising graduate research aligned with the Department’s focus areas.
- Clinical translation of photodynamic technologies.
- Production of photosensitizing agents based on nanobiotechnology.
